Dog Car Harness Essential For Safe Road Travel

December 22, 2010 by Jodie L
Tweet

Dog Car Harness Essential For Safe Road Travel. I have just received my RAC dog car harness for my Staffordshire Terrier Mia, and I have to say that I am really excited. I have recently passed my driving test, and can’t wait to be able to take my pooch to the beach for some morning runs. If you know anything about this breed, you will know that they need alot of exercise, otherwise they attention seek all day!

I personally would not drive with my dog in the car without knowing that she is harnessed in. Mia loves to sit on my lap, and without a harness she would try her best to get there, unaware that she could cause an accident.

To give you a good idea of why it is important to buy a car harness for you and your passengers safety, I want to share this video with you that I found on YouTube.

Dog Christmas Video | Wrapping A Puppy For Christmas? This video is inspired by the famous how to wrap a cat for Christmas movie. Seriously though, if you are planning or getting a new family pet this Christmas, why not adopt a dog from an animal shelter. That would be the best Christmas present ever for an abandoned pooch this holiday season!

“Travel Rules When On The Road With Your Pet by Kim Salerno

You’re all packed and ready to hit the open road with Fido and Fluffy for your next travel adventure. Practicing some common sense rules of the road will help ensure that your precious pet has a happy and safe trip.

No heads out the window: Although many pets find that sticking their head out the window is the best part of the road trip, it’s not safe. Your pet can easily be injured by flying debris. This should go without saying, but NEVER travel with a pet in the back of a pickup truck. Some states have laws restricting such transport and it is always dangerous.

Frequent pit stops: Always provide frequent bathroom and exercise breaks. Most travel service areas have designated areas for walking your pet. Be sure to stay in this area particularly when you pet needs a potty break…and of course, bring along a bag to pick up after your pet. When outside your vehicle, make sure that your pet is always on a leash and wearing a collar with a permanent and temporary travel identification tag.

Proper hydration: During your pit stops be sure to provide your pet with some fresh water to wet their whistle. Occasionally traveling can upset your pet’s stomach. Take along ice cubes, which are easier on your pet than large amounts of water.

Watch the food intake: It is recommended that you keep feeding to a minimum during travel. Be sure to feed them their regular pet food and resist the temptation to give them some of your fast food burger or fries (that never has a good ending).
Don’t leave them alone: Never leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle. On warm days, the temperature in your vehicle can rise to 120 degrees in minutes, even with the windows slightly open. In addition, an animal left alone in a vehicle is an open invitation to pet thieves.

Practice restraint: Be sure that your pet is safely restrained in your vehicle. Utilizing a pet safety harness or travel kennel are the best ways to keep your pet safe. They not only protect your pet from injury, but they help by keeping them from distracting you as you drive. A safety harness functions like a seatbelt. While most pets will not have a problem adjusting to it, you may want to let them wear the harness by itself a few times before using it in the vehicle. If your pet prefers a travel kennel, be sure it is well ventilated and stabilized. Many pet owners prefer vehicle barriers, particularly for larger pets. Vehicle barriers are best suited for SUVs. No matter what method you choose, back seat travel is always safer for your pet.

Safe and comfortable: Whatever method you choose to properly restrain your pet in your vehicle, be sure to make their comfort a priority. Just as it’s important for your “seat” to be comfortable for your long road trip, your pet’s seat should be comfortable too. Typically their favorite blanket or travel bed will do the trick. There are also some safe and very cozy pet car seats available that your pet may find quite comfy.

Pet friendly accommodations etiquette: If your journey’s itinerary requires an overnight stay along the way at a pet friendly accommodation, there are a number of tips to consider.

- Get a ground floor room to make bathroom runs easier.

- At check-in, inquire about areas to walk your pet.

- Cover any furniture and beds your pet will be allowed on.

- Place litter boxes in the bathroom to make clean up easier

- Avoid leaving your pet alone in the room. Even the best behaved pets can bark and become destructive when in a new environment. If your plans require you to stay for a longer period of time, inquire about local pet sitters or pet day care. If your pet’s demeanor is such that you are able to leave them alone for a short period of time, be sure to alert the front desk. It also may help to put the tv or radio on to keep your pet comfortable, and place a note on your door indicating that your precious pet is inside.

- Always keep your pet on a leash and refrain from taking them into the lodging dining areas.

- And of course…always clean up after your pet after bathroom runs

Following some basic rules during road travel will help to make your journey with your little one much more enjoyable and safe!”

Pet Dog Snow Play | A Festive Laugh This Christmas

November 29, 2010 by Jodie L

Pet dog snow play, this pooch loves the snow! Whilst most of us moan and dislike Winter Weather, especially when it makes everyday life grind to a halt, dogs seem to love it! This video made me laugh, so I had to share it with you. Merry Christmas!

If you are concerned about your dog staying warm this Winter, I thoroughly recommend buying him or her a dog coat. I bought one for my Staffy just the other day as she is short haired, and shivers when I take her out, poor thing. Here is a link to the dog coat that I bought her, and I will do a video review of it soon to show you. I am very pleased with it, just make sure you get the right size.

We love all of these products, and they come in a range of prices to suit any type of budget. Unfortunately there is no UK distributor for Snoozer dog car seats in the UK, but during our research we found that ebay was the best place to get a brilliant deal on dog products. Plus you get full consumer protection from ebay, so you can rest assured that if you are not happy with your shipped product, you can return it free of charge.

We have tried and tested all of these products, and as we love Snoozer’s safety features and build quality, we still rate them as the best.

The real gem of all of these dog car seats is the new Snoozer Pet Lookout Perch Booster seat range. This is a booster seat that fits straight onto your car seat, flush, so it looks neat and tidy. It is made from nylon quilting and simulated lambs wool, so it will be a soft and cosy ride for your pooch.

The best part about the Snoozer Perches is that they come in either half size or full size, in a range of colours, so you can choose the full size bench perch seat if you own a large dog. Most dog car seats don’t cater for larger breeds, so we are glad that Snoozer have filled this gap in the market.

Despite the size of the seat, it is extremely light. Snoozer Perch car seats fit any car, and have removable covers for washing easily.

So why not pamper your pet this holiday season with a new dog car seat. He will love you for it, especially if he is prone to getting car sick! As always with Snoozer, the seat has built in straps so that your dog can be secured into the car with a harness.

For help choosing a harness, see our dog harness reviews. Enjoy!

Dog Car Seats | Pet Restraints Soon To Be Legal Requirement In Ireland

Snoozer LookoutDog car seats or some kind of pet restraint such as a dog car harness will soon be a requirement if you want to enjoy taking your pooch for a drive to the park or beach, or on holiday with you. I just stumbled across this article featured in the Irish Independent about new fines that are about to be introduced in Ireland. Be sure to read this so that you don’t get caught out.

“Fines On The Way For Drivers Who Don’t Belt Up Their Pets

John Fallon, Monday October 04 2010

DRIVERS could soon be penalised for not having their pets restrained in their car.

That will be case if Ireland follows California’s lead and makes it illegal to have a pet on your lap while driving. Motorists in the US state are hit with a $35 (€25) fine if they are caught with an unrestrained pet and now a pilot scheme has been launched in Mayo aimed at getting motorists to belt up their animals.

Mayo County Council road safety officer Noel Gibbons said loose animals in a car posed a real threat to safety.

“Any passenger can be a distraction and we need people to belt up the whole family, including pets,” Mr Gibbons said. “An unrestrained dog or cat in the car during travel can be a hazardous distraction to a driver.

“Even if your pet is well behaved, you still have to consider your pet’s safety should another driver cause you to slam on your brakes or get into a collision,” he added.

And the danger does not sit solely with the driver, as emergency services often encounter angry animals at the scenes of car accidents, which can delay medical attention for injured parties.

“Maybe the dog escapes through a broken window and dashes into traffic, causing more collisions and very often getting killed,” said Mayo paramedic Damien Feeney.

“Or maybe the dog gets protective of its human and won’t permit the emergency workers into the vehicle to assist.”

Now, road safety organisations have teamed up with Petworld to offer safety restraints at reduced prices in their stores for the coming week as part of a pilot scheme aimed at getting motorists to belt up their animals.“

Dog Travel Tips | Dog Car Seats Provide Safety & Comfort

Snoozer Blue Tartan Lookout-IIIf you are looking for a dog car seat, or some dog travel equipment for the car, train, boat or plane, then the first priority of course will be to make sure that your pooch is safe and comfortable.

Many pet car seats or carriers are fitted with great safety features and practical little additions. For example, Snoozer car seats have storage compartments to keep your dogs leash, treats and other doggie parafanlia in one place. Other dog car seats also double up as a dog bed or pet carrier, so you can have the benefit of dual functionality.

I just stumbled upon this great article about Dog Travel Safety written by Emily S Frangipane. Read on for essential pet travel tips…

“One thing that you can definitely say without much objection is that dogs love going on vacation and traveling with their families. Some breeds love it so much, that it would appear they were demanding this type of activity happening on a regular basis.

One thing that you can definitely say without much objection is that dogs love going on vacation and traveling with their families. Some breeds love it so much, that it would appear they were demanding this type of activity happening on a regular basis. Suffice it to say, if you and yours are taking a dog on a vacation for the first time, here are 5 precautions to take where traveling with your dog is concerned.Always protect them from the heat – no matter how cool it feels to humans, remember that leaving a dog inside of a vehicle could have some sad consequences.

Even if you leave the windows open slightly for ventilation purposes, a car can heat up like an oven and kill your dog.Make sure that they are safe and secure when the vehicle is on the road – you wouldn’t just let one of your children wander around out of their car seats and/or seat belt so why would you do that with your dog? There are a number of harnesses available on the market today that enable you to secure your dog by attaching them to their crates and the seat belts.Keep them fed and hydrated – even though you may be tempted to cut back a little while you are traveling, you should make sure that they get fed as often as when they are at home and have plenty of water to drink in or out of your vehicle.

Don’t forget the leash – whether you let them run around loose or not at home when you take them for a walk, you want to make sure that they are never off their dog leash and collars, unless they are in for the night with you. A primary rule of thumb to follow with dogs, when they are leash-trained, is that you never want to give them an opportunity to run, travel, from you when they are not in familiar surroundings. If your dog is flying with you – most baggage and cargo areas in the bellies of airplanes are not climate controlled and this can be dangerous as well as life-threatening to your dog.

If you absolutely have to fly, schedule your vacation in the cooler months of spring or fall when the temperatures are not too cold or hot. Always use an airline pet carrier for safety and comfort of your pet.Although all of this may seem like common sense to most people, you would be surprised at the number of pets that perish in those airline baggage and cargo bays.

Emily owns and operates http://www.doggietravelgear.com/ where she offers all things doggie travel. DoggieTravelGear is known for it’s exciting, high quality products and exceptional customer service. We have everything you need to travel with your dog. Our Dog Car Seats keep your dog safe and secure in one place in your backseat. Our Dog Carriers are perfect for airline travel, or a quick trip to the market. And yes, we have Dog Strollers!! We have everything you need for your next trip to the store, weekend getaway or cross country trip. Take your doggie on the road!”
